PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a latently crimpable polyester yarn that presents excellent natural feeling and dry feeling, when the yarn is woven or knitted and subjected to crimp development treatment and further can obtain fabric having an appropriate level of stretchability. SOLUTION: This is a latently crimpable polyester multifilament yarn and satisfies the following characteristics, when it is subjected to the crimp development treatment; (1) the high crimp parts and low crimp parts are alternatively formed in the longitudinal direction and the lengthwise proportion of the high crimp parts is 20 to 60 %; (2) the cross section area of single filament constituting the high crimp parts is larger than that of the low crimp parts. The ratio of cross section area of the single filament in the high crimp parts to the low crimp parts is preferably 1.05 to 1.30 and the Uster unevenness of the yarn is preferably more than 2% before the development of the latent crimps.
