Method for reducing the chemical oxygen demand and degrading lipophilic material in waste water comprises feeding it into a gravity separator (1). It is then passed to a storage tank (2), from which it is pumped into a flotation tank (3). The microflocs produced, supported by gas bubbles, is removed as flotate and fed back to the gravity separator, from which it is removed as part of the floating layer (12) and disposed of.
