OPTICAL CONVERTER

A low-cost and small-structured optical converter is provided for converting or amplifying a frequency of light radiation of both continuous wave and pulse wave. A multilayer structure (6) of a metal and a dielectric is provided. On an uppermost layer (1) of the multilayer structure (6), a transparent dielectric material (prism) (17) is arranged, incident beams (16) are coupled by a coupling means (14), and a prescribed surface plasmon polariton mode is used. Thus, output beams (18, 20) reflected by a sample are modulated or the amplitude of which are amplified.
