PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base oil which is used for lubricants and has excellent biodegradability and thermal oxidation stability, and to provide a lubricant composition. SOLUTION: This biodegradable base oil for the lubricants comprises a fat or fatty oil derivative obtained by conducting an alkylene oxide addition reaction and an ester interchange reaction of fat and oil, an aliphatic carboxylic acid and an alkylene oxide as raw materials in a mixed state.
