PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve linear recording density and overwrite characteristics, while preventing the erasure of adjacent tracks. SOLUTION: A magnetic head is formed with a magnetic pole layer 20, a gap layer 22, a thin film coil 24, and a recording shield layer 26. In a medium facing surface ABS, the end of the recording shield layer 26 is disposed at the front side with respect to the traveling direction T of a recording medium with a prescribed small gap formed by the gap layer 22 with respect to the end of the magnetic pole layer 20. The magnetic pole layer 20 includes a first part 20A having a prescribed thickness in which the end on the side of the medium facing surface ABS is disposed at a position apart from the medium facing surface ABS and a second part 20B disposed between the first part 20A and the medium facing surface ABS and having a thickness smaller than that of the first part 20A.
