PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protective fence capable of efficiently absorbing impact energy by sliding of a rope body, and absorbing the impact energy by deformation of columns. SOLUTION: The columns 2, 3 and 2 are erected with intervals, and rope materials 4 and 4' being a rope body are vertically installed at an interval between these columns 2, 3 and 2. The two rope materials 4 and 4' are gripped in predetermined frictional force by a shock absorber 21, and when tension not less than a predetermined value acts on the rope material 4 and 4', sliding of the rope materials 4 and 4' is allowed. A guide groove 12 is arranged for guiding one rope material 4 along the column 3. When the tension not less than the predetermined value acts on the rope materials 4 and 4' by impact force such as a falling rock, the rope materials 4 and 4' slide to the shock absorber 21, to absorb the impact force by friction energy by this sliding. In this case, even if the rope material 4 slides to the column 3, since the rope materials 4 and 4 slide along the guide groove 12, the rope materials can smoothly slide without applying unreasonable force to the rope material 4 and the column 3.
