摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rechargeable lithium-ion battery which has high discharge capacity, a suppressed increase in irreversible capacity and is excellent in cycling characteristics, even when electrode density is made higher, and to provide a negative electrode, a negative electrode material for the same, and a method for manufacturing a carbon material for the same. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing a carbon material, heat-treated pitch containing mesocarbon microspheres or a mixture of mesocarbon microspheres with fibrous, spherical or lumpy carbon is heat-treated at a high temperature after adjusting a content of volatile portions to 2.0-30 mass%. The negative electrode material and the negative electrode for a rechargeable lithium-ion battery includes the resulting carbon material.
