PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide graphite oxide which is drastically reduced in the remaining amount of sulfuric acid ions and nitric acid ions.

SOLUTION: The graphite oxide is obtained by mixing a catalyst expressed by general formula (1) and a solution having an oxidizing agent with raw material graphite and reacting the mixture. In the formula, a ring Y represents a ring of at least one kind among aromatic or non-aromatic 5- to 12-membered rings having double bonds and X represents an oxygen atom or hydroxy group.
