<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical shutter element which can control the transmission of UV light by using a liquid cristal and obtain the uniform contrast of the outgoing light over a wide incidence angle. <P>SOLUTION: Liquid crystal molecules are laid substantially parallel with the surfaces of a pair of substrates 2, 3, and a pair of UV polarizer plates 13, 14 are inserted between the pair of substrates 2, 3 by sandwiching the liquid crystal cells 1 twist arranged in the initial orientation state with an angle of 90°±10°. The Δnd of the above liquid crystal cells 1 and the directions of the absorption axes 13a, 14a of the pair of UV light polarizer plates 13, 14 are set so that the light transmissivity becomes minimum when the liquid crystal molecules are aligned in the initial orientation but becomes large as the liquid crystal molecules change their orientation when a voltage is applied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
