PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To focus on an arbitrary subject in a field. SOLUTION: In times t11 to t12, t13 to t14, t15 to t16, t17 to t18, t19 to t20, and t21 to t22 in which even fields are displayed, the position of a focus lens is set to a position L2 as a reference focusing position and an image which is picked up at this time are displayed. In times t10 to t11, t12 to t13, t14 to t15, t16 to t17, t18 to t19, t20 to t21, and t22 to t23 in which odd fields are displayed, the position of the focus lens is changed to positions L0 to L5 as reference focusing positions in order and based upon the sharpness of a picked-up image, a focusing position is detected; and information showing the focusing position is displayed overlapping images displayed in the even fields to enable selection.
