PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having high light emitting efficiency and excellent driving durability. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element comprises a light emitting layer having a hole-transporting light emitting layer including at least one kind of hole-transporting host, a buffer layer including at least one kind of buffer layer material and an electron-transporting light emitting layer including at least one kind of electron-transporting host which are laminated between a pair of electrodes in this order from the side of a positive electrode, wherein the value of the ionization potential of the buffer layer material is the middle of the value of the ionization potential of the hole-transporting host and the value of the ionization potential of the electron-transporting host, and/or the value of the electron affinity of the buffer layer material is the middle of the value of the electron affinity of the hole-transporting host and the value of the electron affinity of the electron-transporting host.
