PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively improve the scavenging property of an engine in automatic stoppage and securely re-start the engine by stopping a piston at a proper position. SOLUTION: This engine starter is so formed that the engine is re-started when the requirements for re-staring the engine in an automatic stop state are satisfied. The engine starter comprises an automatic stop control means (ECU 2) which operates an intake flow control means formed of a throttle valve 23 to the increase side of an intake flow at the beginning of the automatic stop operation of the engine and operates the intake flow control means to the decrease side of the intake flow after a specified time is passed after a fuel injection is completed. When the rotating resistance of the engine detected by a rotating resistance detection means formed of an oil temperature detection means is large when the engine is automatically stopped, a timing to operate the intake flow control means to the decrease side of the intake flow is advanced more than a case in which the rotating resistance is low.
