PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an underwater welding head for performing repair welding of a hollow structure member in an atomic power plant and the like and which insures the execution of good quality welding approximately equivalent to that of aerial welding by stably maintaining a gaseous environment of a welding area even when, for example, a welding execution surface is not a plane surface.

SOLUTION: Even if an error occurs in a set distance between the welding head 11 and the execution surface P, an appropriate gap (nozzle gap X) can be maintained by slidingly adjusting a gas injection nozzle 13 and a good aerial state can be maintained by maintaining the gaseous space around the execution area at the normal state even under the water and expelling the water without bringing the gas injection nozzle 13 into contact with the surface P for welding execution. Also, the extension position of the welding wire 15 by a welding wire feed pipe 22 can also be corrected similarly simultaneously with the sliding adjustment of the gas injection nozzle 13 and therefore the appropriate insertion position of the welding wire 15 can be maintained for the execution surface P.
