<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer electrolyte fuel cell having a high assembling property, an excellent sealing property and a stable output property at operation. <P>SOLUTION: The polymer electrolyte fuel cell has a water absorbing material made of a substance swelling by water absorption at a gap between an electrode and a sealing member. As a sufficient clearance can be secured between the sealing member and the electrode at assembling, it becomes easy to be assembled. When the assembled fuel cell is operated, the water absorbing material at the gap swells by absorbing the water generated by the electrochemical reaction of the water in supplied gas and/or that at the electrode, whereby, the gas is prevented from flowing out to the gap. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
