PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce lateral crosstalks, by driving a dummy pixel electrode provided at both sides of an effective display region at a gradation different from the effective display region. SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal display using a TFD element, a plurality of the dummy pixel electrodes 80 are provided so as to make a vertical row on both sides of the effective display region V, respectively. Since each dummy pixel electrode 80 is covered with a black light shielding layer BM, an observer cannot see it, even if each dummy pixel electrode 80 is driven to display an image. When gray or the like is made the background color for displaying white or black rectangle, the dummy pixel electrode 80 is driven at gradation different from the gradation of the effective display region V by a first gradation control method.
