A wireless communication procedure selects (120) a mobile station (12) operating mode for wireless communication with another mobile (12) through a base station (14) using a fully GSM (Global System for Mobiles) compliant protocol (121) stack or another mode for direct communication through a second partially GSM compliant protocol (122) stack . The second protocol uses FDMA and TDMA physical layers and LAPDm security layer defined in the GSM (Global System for Mobiles) specifications. Independent claims are included for mobile stations using the procedure.
