<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To emphasize a contour without generating an unnatural contour. <P>SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus is provided with: a Y contour emphasis processing section 122 for applying contour emphasis to a Y signal in a YCC signal; an RGB contour emphasis processing section 126 for applying contour emphasis to each of R, G, B color signals; and a selector 130 that selects either of the image signal subjected to Y contour emphasis by the Y contour emphasis processing section 122 and the image signal subjected to the contour emphasis applied to each of R, G, B color signals by the RGB contour emphasis processing section 126 on the basis of the correspondence relation of a hue between a first region (e.g., part of a skin of a face) in an image (e.g., a picture of a person) of the object of the contour emphasis and a second region (e.g., blue back) adjacent to the first region.
