PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a stepping motor drive capable of controlling a current command variably depending on the motor load not only at the time of stoppage and operation but also at the time of high speed response. SOLUTION: The stepping motor drive having a microstep function comprises an excitation angle generator generating a sine wave motor current from an external command pulse, a current controller, a current detector, an angle detector, a coordinate converter for calculating a torque component current by performing coordinate conversion of a current value detected by the current detector with the rotational angle value of rotor detected by the angle detector, an absolute value converter for converting the torque component current into an absolute value, and a current command regulator for continuously varying the range from a minimum current command value capable of driving the motor to a maximum current command value for maximizing the output torque of the motor wherein the current command is varied depending on the load torque of the motor.
