PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a stepping motor drive capable of controlling a current command variably depending on the motor load not only at the time of stoppage and operation but also at the time of high speed response. SOLUTION: The stepping motor drive having a microstep function comprises an excitation angle generator generating a sine wave motor current, a current controller, a current detector, an angle detector, a coordinate converter for calculating a torque component current from the current value detected by the current detector and the rotational angle value of rotor detected by the angle detector, an absolute value converter for converting the torque component current into an absolute value, and a proportional controller having a coefficient of 1 or above and outputting a value proportional to the torque component current subjected to absolute value conversion wherein the current command is varied depending on the load torque of the motor by adding the output value from the proportional controller to a minimum current command value capable of driving the motor.
