PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system capable of carrying out an authentication procedure even when a terminal employs new hardware. SOLUTION: A RADIUS server 4 to which an authentication word for particularizing a user is registered is provided into a network, an authentication DHCP server 2b is provided to a relaying apparatus 2 for relaying frames to the network, and when a terminal 1 physically connected to the relaying apparatus 2 requests an IP address by the DHCP, the authentication DHCP server 2b provides a tentative IP address to the terminal 1 to form a closed authentication subnet wherein communication is available only between the relaying apparatus 2 and the terminal 1, the relaying apparatus 2 inquires of the RADIUS server 4 about the authentication word entered from the terminal 1, and when the RADIUS server 4 admits the authentication, the communication from the terminal 1 to the network can be permitted.
