PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carbon fiber woven fabric that has proper gas permeability, small thickness change in compression, low electrical resistivity in the thickness direction and is suitable as a gas diffusion layer for a solid polymer type fuel cell and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The carbon fiber woven fabric has 80-150 g/m<SP>2</SP>weight, 0.30-0.50 g/cm<SP>3</SP>bulk density,≤30% thickness change in compression by pressure application at 1 MPa in the thickness direction and 200-700 ml/min×cm<SP>2</SP>×mmH<SB>2</SB>O gas permeability. The carbon fiber woven fabric is produced by attaching 10-30 mass% of a thermosetting resin to a carbon fiber woven fabric base material having 65-130 g/m<SP>2</SP>weight, heating and curing the thermosetting resin and graphitizing the carbon fiber woven fabric base material at 1,500-2,800°C.
