PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an opening and closing device capable of preventing an obstacle sensing means from causing a sensing fault in the case a release section and/or a capture section do not follow the operation of an opening and closing body by an unexpected situation. SOLUTION: The obstacle sensing means 50 is slidably equipped with the release section 51 and the capture section 52 projected to the closing direction of the opening and closing body from the opening and closing body 10 in the opening and closing direction of the opening and closing body, an obstacle sensing medium is released to approximately the width direction of the opening and closing body from the release section 51, an obstacle existing in a course (s) of the obstacle sensing medium is sensed by the capture section 52 and, at the same time, it is so constituted that the approach and contact of the release section 51 and/or the capture section 52 to the opening and closing body 10 can be sensed by a protection sensing section 60, a controlling means 40 makes predetermined when it is decided as an abnormal situation in the case there is a sense by the protection sensing section 60 at least during the closing operation of the opening and closing body 10.
