PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for selecting an active component in a damping material which method can easily select a novel active component; and a damping material capable of exhibiting excellent damping performance. SOLUTION: The damping material contains a base material and an active component for increasing the quantity of dipole moment of the base material. The method for selecting the active component in the damping material comprises a first warming step for warming an inspection subject until it melts, a cooling step for cooling the melt of the subject until it solidifies, and a second warming step for warming the subject in a solid state, these steps being performed one after another with a differential scanning colorimeter. An inspection subject of which the heat absorption peak based upon its melting point appears in the first warming step and disappears in the second warming step is selected as the active component; otherwise, an inspection subject of which the heat absorption peak based upon its melting point appears in the first warming step and of which the heat generation peak basing upon its crystallization appears in the second warming step is selected as the active component.
