PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal ring defect detector for improving efficiency and precision, when investigating the state, size, depth, or the like of a defect 9a in detail. SOLUTION: The metal ring defect detector 15, having a defect detecting means 20 for detecting defects on the surface of a metal ring 2 in an endless belt shape comprises a reference index detection means 21 for detecting a specific section (welded trace 7a) always existing at one location in the peripheral direction of the metal ring as a reference index, and a position specifying means 22 for specifying the position of a defect detected by the defect detecting means as a relative position from the reference index detected by the reference index detection means.
