An adsorbent for oral administration characterized by comprising active carbon spheres having an average particle diameter of from 50 to 200 mum, a specific surface area determined by the BET method of 700 m<2>/g or more and a bulk density of less than 0.54 g/mL. Because of having a high adsorbing capacity, this adsorbent can adsorb a large amount of a toxic substance within the retention time thereof in the intestinal tract and shows a remarkable increase in the adsorption amount of a high-molecular weight compound.
