Production of a multilayer sheet (A), having a plastics film carrier layer (PF) supporting at least one non-woven layer (NW) welded in pleats, involves: (a) passing NW over finger strips of a grooved roller arranged in a fan shape (where the length of a finger is aligned with an indentation of a groove), so that NW is guided into the indentations and the breadth of the sheet is gathered up; (b) continuously laying PF over the pleated NW; and (c) welding the layers together using heating elements arranged on the upper edge of the grooves. An independent claim is included for apparatus for the process, comprising a roller (1) with grooves (2) and a fan-shaped arrangement of finger strips corresponding with the grooves. Pleated NW is passed over the upper surfaces of the grooves and into the bottom of the grooves in the roller upper side region, and the sheet breadth is correspondingly reduced. NW is supplied in pleats to a heater, cooperating with the upper edges of the grooves, to form form longitudinal hollow pleats welded to separately supplied PF. |
