A tubular preform(1) of a flexible woven or non-woven material is reduced in diameter at a point(2) along the length to form a base(10) for the hollow component. The two parts(4,5) of the constricted tube are formed in a tool to create a pot shape, the tool shape being similar to the inner shape of the hollow product. Stabilization of the pot shape is effected by heating and cooling the preform on the tool and/or by applying a plastic layer onto at least one side of the fabric.
