The method involves engaging a gear wheel with a grinding worm (7) and moving the gear wheel axially so that abrasive coating dress the flanks of the grinding worm. A periodic alternating movement of the dressing gear wheel is superimposed on the relative movement and wavelength of the resulting oscillating movement becomes smaller than the useful width of the grinding worm during dressing.
