[Also in Division H1] An electrical conductor having a core of alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or an alloy thereof is made from a flat tape 12 formed concentrically around a wire rope 14, Fig. 1, the abutting longitudinal edges of the tape being welded by a unit 22, and the closed tube 21 filled with the core material. The rope 14 is located centrally within the tube by plates 90, 91, 92, the upper plate 90 being supported from an arm 102 which is attached to a column 104. The molten core material is passed through a conduit 98 to fill the tube, which may be of oval cross-section, below the welding unit 22 and the plate 92 and an inert gas is passed through a conduit 100. Molten sodium is preferred but lithium or calcium or their alloys may be used for the conductor and aluminium or copper or possibly lead are suitable for the tube. In an alternative embodiment, wire clips (130) may be fitted over the wire, Figs. 9, 10 (not shown). Each clip includes three radial fingers which contact the tube wall and the gas and sodium conduits pass between the fingers. In alternative constructions, the wire rope may be omitted or a number of conductors may be wrapped round a central strand comprising a steel centre with an aluminium shell (200), Fig. 11 (not shown). In a further variation two concentric tubes may be made and the space between them filled with molten sodium.
