Apparatus for steaming running lengths of yarn comprises an elongated steaming chamber having steam inlet and outlet means at opposite sides, the steam passing substantially transverse to the direction of yarn travel. In a preferred embodiment, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), the steam inlet means comprises an elongated foraminous plate 16 which communicates with an inner chamber 6; the steam outlet means comprises a threading slot 18 for the yarn. The steam is supplied to outer chambers 4 which communicate with the chamber 6 through metering orifices 8, the steam being distributed throughout the chamber 6 by impinging on a curved screen 12 within the chamber 6. The distributing means may alternatively be in the form of a baffle plate made, for example, of aluminium. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), a steam supply pipe 104 extends the length of the apparatus and communicates with outer chambers 106. The chambers 106 supply steam via orifice 114 to a reheat chamber 112 which surrounds the supply pipe 104. The steam then passes through the inlet means to the steaming chamber. Two or more supply pipes surrounded by a reheat chamber may be provided.
