<PICT:1082459/C6-C7/1> A testing assembly for testing for the presence of micro-organisms comprises a sterile container (not shown) and a rigid applicator 16, provided with a solid mass of culture medium 18 at one end, removably housed in the container. The applicator may be made of wood or plastics material and may have one or more projections 17 to assist in the retention of the culture medium. The projection may be in the form of an arrowhead. The culture medium, which is supported in a cotton swab, should contain at least 3% by weight of agar. Formulations of culture media suitable for the identification of Candida albicans, Streptococci, Staphylococci, Proteus, and of general bacterial growth in urine are specified. The culture medium for determining the presence of Candida albicans includes a colour indicator (bismuth sulphite) and an antibiotic (neomycin) to inhibit bacterial growth while permitting any growth of Candida albicans and other moulds; these latter, including penicillium, do not give with the bismuth sulphite the dark brown or black colour characteristic of Candida albicans.
