METHOD AND DEVICE FOR JOINING METAL PLATES BY FRICTION WELDING

A friction welding where metal plate members layered on each other are joined without producing burrs. A circular column-like rotating member has a large-diameter section (1) whose top section is formed flat and has a circular column-like or half-circular-cone-like small-diameter section (3) on the top section of the large-diameter section. The small-diameter section is coaxial with the large-diameter section, is of a cocentric circle having the diameter smaller than that of the top section, is flat, and has the height not more than the thickness of either (6) of the plate members to be joined. In joining, the circular column-like or half-circular- cone-like small-diameter section in rotation is pressed into the one plate member (6) such that there is a gap (5) between the flat top section (2) of the large-diameter section (1) and the either (6) of the plate members. The metal plate members are joined while burrs produced from the gap (5) are cut by the flat top section (2) of the large-diameter section (1) and a corner section (8).
