PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a recording layer constituted of uneven patterns and capable of obtaining stable head floating characteristics. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 10 is constructed in such a manner that a recording layer 12 is constituted of recessed and projected patterns, the recess 14 of the recessed and projected patterns of the recording layer 12 is filled with a nonmagnetic material 16, and a recessed and projected ratio R obtained by dividing the area of a surface projected part by the area of a surface recessed part and the step S of the surface recessed and projected parts satisfies the relation of S≤3.6×R.
