A device for detecting the presence or absence of a component at a predetermined location on a cable harness mounting panel comprises a scanning device for optically scanning the predetermined location, an optically detectable mark in a space or plane located behind the predetermined location, and a device which determines that the component is present at the predetermined location when the scanning device does not detect the mark during optical scanning and which determines that the component is absent when the scanning device detects the mark.
