ACCESS PROTECTION FOR COMPUTER SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide access protection and theft protection for a computer system.

SOLUTION: An access protection mechanism uses a particular time interval at which the computer system operates in a normal mode. After the time interval has elapsed, the computer system switches to a lock mode to prevent activation of the computer system. In the lock mode, the function of the system is restricted to a password dialog. A corresponding password is available only from a central database system after a user's identification has been checked. The computer system is prevented from being switched to the lock mode by periodically installing updates of subsequent software applications of a particular software application. The installation of updates of the software applications causes the time interval to elapse after the next software update becomes usable.
