<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quantity of display light and a contrast in transmitting mode by suitably using an optical compensating film. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device is equipped with: retardation plates and polarizing plates arranged above and below a nematic liquid crystal cell. A nematic liquid crystal layer has its twist angle by a rubbing process set in the range of 0 to 70°. A lower retardation plate has a 1st lower retardation plate using a discotic liquid crystal film with hybrid alignment and a 2nd lower retardation plate using a three-dimensional refractive index anisotropic high polymer film whose three-dimensional refractive index coefficient is -0.7 to 0.7. A tilt of the liquid crystal layer is compensated by the 1st lower retardation plate using the discotic liquid crystal film with hybrid alignment and a phase difference is given by the 2nd lower retardation plate using the high polymer film having three-dimensional refractive index anisotropy along the thickness of the liquid crystal cell, so that the angle of view the liquid crystal device is made wider and the contrast is improved. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
