<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method with which in the case of hardening a cylindrical material from the outer surface, the hardened depth is different with length position by one time of hardening. <P>SOLUTION: In the method for hardening the outer surface of the cylindrical material, performing a shifting hardening by arranging an induction-heating coil and a water injecting device surrounding the cylindrical material, the hardening to the cylindrical material is performed while selecting either one of the water passing-through state, with which the water pours into the inner part from the one end of the cylindrical material and discharges from the other end, and the water stopping state, with which the passing-through of the water is stopped under free state of the water discharge, according to the shifting position of the induction-heating coil and the water injecting device.
