PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide defect control by which also a write-once type recording medium can be interchangeable with a rewritable recording medium. SOLUTION: The write-once type recording medium 10 is provided with a definite defect management area 13 for recording definitely defect management information, a plurality of temporary defect management area 14A, 14B, 14C for recording temporarily defect management information. Before the recording medium is finalized, updated defect management information is recorded in any of the plurality of temporary defect management area for each update of defect management information. Further, the recording medium 10 is provided with a status information recording area 15, status information indicating the temporary defect management area in which finally recorded defect management information exists is recorded in the area 15.
