The device consists of a cylindrical gas generator (10) whose outer surface (10a) has thrust neutral outlets (12) in an annular region and a deflector element (20) of heat-resistant material rigidly joined to the gas generator and at least partly enclosing at least the annular region. The deflector element has bores (22) opposite the outlets in the annular region and closed by at least one closure element (24) of a meltable or combustible material. The bores are arranged so that the gas generator unit is thrust neutral in the absence of the closure element.
