PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control opening characteristic of an engine valve to a safety side, even if a sensor fault or renewal delay of a detection value of a rotation phase is occurred. SOLUTION: In an engine equipped with a variable valve timing mechanism for changing the rotation phase of a cam shaft to a crank shaft, an operation angle center of an intake valve is detected on the basis of an angle from a reference rotational position of the crank shaft to a reference rotational position of the cam shaft, and an operating state of the variable valve timing mechanism is detected, thereby directly detecting the operating angle center. On the basis of a value on a delay angle side of both detection results, the variable valve timing mechanism is feedback controlled. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
