PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser apparatus capable of scanning a target with a high output laser beam at a high speed without using a mechanical scanning mechanism. SOLUTION: In a photonic crystal laser constituted of forming an active layer 21 and a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal layer 23 between upper electrodes 33 and a lower electrode 27, a plurality of upper electrodes 33 are linearly arranged. A current is led from one or a plurality of adjacent upper electrodes 33. When light is generated from the active layer 21 and the generated light is strengthened by diffraction in the 2D photonic crystal layer 23, strong laser light is generated from the periphery of the upper electrodes 33 from which the current is led to the outside. When the upper electrodes from which a current is led are successively switched, a target can be scanned with laser beams in the array direction of the upper electrodes. Since the upper electrodes 33 can be electrically switched, the target can be scanned with laser beams at a high speed without using the mechanical scanning mechanism. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
