PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning apparatus where a cleaning performance of a cleaning blade is maintained as much as possible, and to provide an image forming apparatus equipped with the cleaning apparatus. SOLUTION: The apparatus is provided with the cleaning blade which is a sheet-like member, whose leading end comes in contact with the surface of an object to be cleaned cyclically moving in a prescribed direction, and which is arranged while inclining toward the downstream side in the cyclic moving direction of the object to be cleaned with reference to a vertical line vertically standing from the surface of the object, and for removing foreign matter lying on the surface by the leading end which is pressurized against the surface, a pressure member for pressurizing the leading end of the cleaning blade against the surface of the object to be cleaned while expanding/contracting, and a control member for controlling the pressure member so as not to expand/contract longer than a prescribed length.
