PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame resistant fiber nonwoven fabric of excellent mechanical properties, or to provide a carbon fiber nonwoven fabric excellent in mechanical properties and electrical properties, that is, to provide a new flame resistant fiber nonwoven fabric or carbon fiber nonwoven fabric enabling more highly exerting various properties including excellent mechanical properties, flame retardancy and electrical properties inherent in flame resistant fiber or carbon fiber, and to provide methods for producing the flame resistant fiber nonwoven fabric and carbon fiber nonwoven fabric, respectively. SOLUTION: The flame resistant fiber nonwoven fabric that is derived from a straight-chain polymer is such that constituent fibers are directly joined to one another, or the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric that is derived from the straight-chain polymer is such that constituent fibers are directly joined to one another. The method for producing the flameproofed fiber nonwoven fabric comprises carrying out a flame resistant treatment at 40-300°C of a precursor fiber nonwoven fabric with constituent fibers made from the straight-chain polymer joined directly to one another. The method for producing the carbon fiber nonwoven fabric comprises subjecting the above flame resistant fiber nonwoven fabric to carbonizing treatment at 300-2,000°C in an inert atmosphere.
