PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce localized heat generated in a vicinity of an extraction end of a walking beam type heating furnace. SOLUTION: In a method for controlling the carriage of a material 2 in a walking beam type heating furnace, idling is performed by vertically moving a moving beam 1 at the position on the inner side of the furnace in a vicinity of an extraction end of the heating furnace, and the time used for the idling is calculated. If the time used for the idling does not reach the predetermined idling time, idling is performed before reaching the predetermined idling time at the position on the inner side of the furnace from the extraction end of the heating furnace. Since the material is not carried to the extraction end but moved only in a vertical direction before reaching the predetermined idling time at the position in a vicinity of the extraction end of the heating furnace, the in-furnace time at the extraction end easily affected by the outside air is shortened, and the localized heat is hardly generated.
