PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an adsorbent capable of reducing sulfur content in hydrocarbon oil, particularly in olefin-containing hydrocarbon oil being a base material of gasoline in a moderate condition, and a method for removing a sulfur compound in hydrocarbon oil by using the adsorbent. SOLUTION: The adsorbent of the sulfur compound in hydrocarbon oil is obtained by depositing molybdenum of 10-50 mass% of the total mass of an adsorbent composition in terms of metal on an alumina carrier or a boria-alumina compound oxide carrier.
