PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water cleaning filter capable of suppressing the clogging of cells with a peeled suspended substance when the suspended substance accumulated on a partition wall by filtration operation is peeled by backwashing. SOLUTION: The filter 1 is composed of a filter element 3 having partition walls comprising a porous material and having cells becoming liquid flow channels 4 formed thereto by the partition walls and a casing 2 capable of housing the filter element 3 and constituted so that the filter element 3 is built in the casing 2 so as to allow a liquid to flow in a vertical direction G. The filter element 3 is formed so that the cells 4 become small in diameter in a tapered state from one end parts 4b of the cells to the other end parts 4a thereof and built in the casing so that a raw liquid flows in the cells 4 from one end parts 4b of the cells and the foreign matter deposited on the partition walls in the cells 4 can be discharged toward one end parts 4b at the time of backwashing.
