PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing an optically active nitroalcohol in a highly stereoselective way. SOLUTION: The method comprises carrying out a reaction between an aldehyde and a nitroalkane in the presence of a base and an optically active metal complex catalyst of general formula(c)( wherein, R<SP>4</SP>, R<SP>5</SP>and R<SP>6</SP>are each H, an alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl or the like, wherein R<SP>5</SP>and R<SP>6</SP>may be joined together to form a ring; X<SP>*</SP>is an asymmetric carbon atom or hydrocarbon group with axial asymmetry; M is a Co ion or Cr ion, when the valence of M is larger than that of the ligand, Y is a salt-forming anion ) to produce the objective optically activeβ-nitroalcohol.
