PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber capable of improving response of a check valve by canceling the weight of the check valve even though the check valve is enlarged in response to an opening area of a port and its weight is also increased. SOLUTION: In the hydraulic shock absorber having a valve mechanism with the suction check valve 15 in a cylinder 2, an urging means 30 for canceling the weight of the check valve 15 is arranged on a back portion of a valve body 15a of the check valve 15.
