PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve startability of an engine by efficiently heightening the compression pressure of a cylinder in an expansion stroke in reverse rotating operation in the early stage of starting the engine. SOLUTION: When predetermined restarting conditions are established, a piston of a cylinder in a compression stroke at the stop of the engine is operated in a reverse rotating direction to heighten pressure in the cylinder by the piston rise of the cylinder in the expansion stroke, and then the engine is rotated in a normal rotating direction by combustion in the cylinder in the expansion stroke to carry out restarting. A control means is provided for stopping the piston of the cylinder in the expansion stroke within a predetermined appropriate range at the stop of the engine and controlling the opening of a throttle valve based on the detection result of a piston position detecting means at the restart of the engine. The control means controls to increase the opening of the throttle valve in the reverse rotating direction operating period of the engine when the piston position of the cylinder in the expansion stroke is on the bottom dead center side rather than a predetermined reference position at the restart of the engine.
