PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device for an automatic transmission structured so that the range changeover operation in the event of failure is made practicable by introducing a mechanical coupling between a select lever and a range position changeover device, capable of widening the degree of freedom in layout owing to small-sized construction of the select lever and generating a select lever operating force characteristic conforming to the requirement. SOLUTION: The select assist device of the automatic transmission includes a control unit 22 equipped with a current limiter 38 whereby a control command equal to or above the specified value is hindered from being forwarded to an assist actuator 9.
